FAT32: Windows XP to format 40GB USB Harddisk

It’s already known that Windows XP only support maximum 32GB for FAT32. As usual, our Uncle Google has given me more than enough links regarding this issue.
After went to some link and reading some information. I found a tool to format FAT32 in Windows 2000/XP/Vista. The tool is called Fat32Formatter, and can be found in : http://tokiwa.qee.jp/EN/Fat32Formatter/index.html.

The tools has small footprint, it’s 388 kb in size, and has a simple & straightforward interface. This
save me a lot of time, since I can run the tool right from the downloaded zip, without require any installation. And the most of all, it’s free!

PowerHub: Enable JConsole to monitor PowerHub

JDK provide Java Monitoring and Management Console (JConsole) tool to provide information on performance and resource consumption of application running in Java platform using Java Management Extension (JMX) technology.

JConsole remotely monitors JMX-enable Java Apps

To enable JMX in PowerHub add lines below to $PE_HOME/bin/runServer:

-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote \

-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.port=8024 \

-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.authenticate=true \

-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.ssl=false \

Notice:
1. JConsole is part of JDK default installation
2. “-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote” is minimum parameter to enable JMX for local console. But this is not advisable.
3. Remote connect of JConsole can be achieve by setting the other three parameters
4. Remote connect use port. Each Java Application should be started with a separate port. e.g: 8001, 8002, 8003,…

ArcSDE: Configure PowerExplorer’s Spatializer

Spatializer that built-into PowerExplorer, enable the user to populate spatial information into shapefiles and ArcSDE database. The Spatializer will query topic (table) in PowerHub and then populate the spatial information in shapefiles/ArcSDE database.
End user can view the layers populated by the Spatializer from within PowerExplorer as shown above.

Spatializer can be configured by modify from the existing out-of-box jobs, or create from scratch. The job configuration is in $PE_HOME/spatializer/jobs.

You might encounter messages:
1. “Integer: value out of range”. There’s integer type of column in your SDE Table, and the value is more than integer can hold.
2. “Warning: Null shape encountered”. Please check your ArcSDE layer’s XY domain. It might be your X/Y coordinate exceed the XY Domain of your ArcSDE layer.

PowerExplorer: Strange UI in Gnome

PowerExplorer, is designed to work in Linux KDE environment.
If you try to open it in Gnome session, it will show you strange interface.

Strange vs Normal interface

You can fix this strange interface by unset the environment:
unset GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID
then call your PowerExplorer startup script, and you will have your normal PowerExplorer interface.

ArcSDE: Learn ArcCatalog

VMWare: Issue Running 64-bit Guest OS on HP 8710w

I successully re-image my laptop, HP 8710w using XP 64-bit. After quite some time, I tested the machine and everything are in place and stable system.

Now, I’m trying to setup the RHEL 4.0 64-bit guest on top of it. There’s no issue when I install VMWare Server. But when I try to startup 64-bit guest, I encounter error message:

This CPU is VT-capable, but VT is not enabled (check your BIOS settings).
You have configured this virtual machine as a 64-bit guest operating system. However, this host’s CPU is not capable of running 64-bit virtual machines or this virtual machine has 64-bit support disabled.

I went to BIOS and enable the VT:
System Configuration > Device Configuration > Virtualization Technology = Enable
Then I rebooted the laptop, and the same error still come up.

Until, I found this website, then I power-off my laptop make sure everything is off. After couple of minutes, I started up the laptop, and the RHEL 64-bit can be started up!

OpenWorks: Create interpretation project failed

It’s failed when creating interpretation project in OpenWorks R5000. The error message says:

Create interpretation project failed:
Failed to insert information in project PROJECTNAME using
begin
PROJECTNAME.ow_prj_utils_pkg.ow_store_password(?,?,);
end;

The ow_prj_utils_pkg.ow_store_password will call java store procedure. This java store procedure is loaded into interpretation project. To load java class into database, OpenWorks will call loadjava utility. The loadjava is oracle utility.

To fix this issue, you have to make sure that you correctly install Oracle 10g.
1. Check the $ORACLE_HOME
2. Make sure loadjava is in your $PATH, check with which loadjava
3. Check the content by calling: more loadjava

Eclipse: Security Manager for Eclipse

Sometime you need to start RMI application inside your eclipse, to do this, you need to edit the eclipse.ini file

-D -Djava.security.manager -Djava.security.policy="server.policy"

Then create a file in eclipse directory security.conf with the following values:
grant { permission java.security.AllPermission; };
And then start your eclipse

Oracle: Drop database 10g

Steps to drop your 10g database:

All files that relate with the database control-file will be deleted as well. But all other file, *dump, password file, pfile still intact. If you wish to delete completely, use $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbca
